Staying the Course
Darfur has been dropping from public vision recently. With the election, other calamities, and general day-to-day life, Americans are forgetting the horrors that are taking place in Darfur. Darfur doesn’t rest. The people of Darfur have not stopped suffering. The Janjaweed and the Sudanese government have not stopped their onslaught. And it seems the international community has not stopped neglecting Darfur. This, despite ongoing violence against those who live in Darfur, Africans who support Darfur, and even UN peacekeepers. The world has shifted focus and in the process has neglected Darfur.
Why does saving Darfur deserves the most attention?
Although there are hundreds of worthy causes one could donate to, none of these causes are reaching out to a disaster that has reached the death toll of 400,000 people (and counting), with more and more people finding themselves forced from their homes, killed, raped, or brutally injured. To make the situation even worse, it is happening in a region where people face 100,000+% inflation, making savings virtually worthless and making it harder to get food. This conflict threatens to spill over the border, and lead to more than just a interregional conflict. Nearly twice the number of all the people who died in the 2004 Tsunami have been killed in just this one region in Africa. Money that goes to this charity will not just support those already affected, but it will end up saving many more lives, by pushing for an end to the genocide. Open your eyes to the suffering in Darfur, and realize how much these innocent people need our help. They have been suffering for years, and this needs to stop. There is no other place in the world at this time that has a worse off situation. Natural disasters may kill thousands at a time, and then find themselves in a time where they need to rebuild and need aid, but deaths brought upon by the Janjaweed and rebel forces kill hundreds of thousands, with thousands more every day, with no end in sight. Please read the previous post “How You Can Help” and get involved with this charity today. It is our responsibility as human beings to stop the suffering of our fellow man, regardless of their nationality, regardless of their race, regardless of their religion. Darfur is the region that needs this help the most. The least we can do is take a few minutes out of our day and sign a petition and send an e-mail to our politicians. Set some money out every month to donate to Darfur. Every penny counts, and will help bring about peace in the violence ridden region of Darfur. Do what you can, and help those suffering in Darfur see that they are not alone in their strife against their oppressors. Show them that we care, and that we are willing to act on their behalf. It’s what they deserve, and what we ought to be morally obligated to do.
